There are three main things one should take into consideration when choosing a web cam. These are Resolution, Frame Rate, and your Internet Connection. We will discuss all three.
RESOLUTION: In order for people to see you clearly, you will want a good resolution rate. In most web cams the standard resolution rate is 320x240. However you can pick and choose. The higher the resolution rate number the better the picture. Some go up to 640x480.
FRAME RATE: Webcams do not run in a continuous stream of film, but rather frame by frame. Because of this you want your frame rate to be fairly high. A rate of 30 frames per second is the best. However, you internet connection will really decide the frame rate.
INTERNET CONNECTION: If you have a faster internet connection, you will be able to get more frames per second and will be able to handle the webcams that support 30 frames per second. However if you have a slower or a dial up connection you will not be able to go that fast. A good example of this is to get a 15 frame per second image you need an upload speed of at least 256kbps.
I hope this helped you in making an educated choice when you pick out your web cam to begin camming the world!
In the next post we will be talking about Lifecasting…What it is and who is doing it.
